3ie transition manny-marie

On behalf of the Commissioners of the International Initiative for Impact Evaluation (3ie), I want to inform you that after five successful years of leading the organisation, Emmanuel ‘Manny’ Jimenez has decided to step down as the executive director of 3ie. Marie Gaarder, currently 3ie’s director of the evaluation office and global director for innovation and country engagement, will assume that role. The leadership transition will be effective February 1, 2020; until that time, Manny will continue to serve in his current capacity.

Manny would like to pursue the next chapter in his life after a long career in development. He has served 3ie during an important time in its organizational evolution, and contributed with both strategic vision and operational excellence. While we are sorry to lose his leadership, we are grateful for his efforts and achievements and wish him great joy in the future.

When the Executive Committee was informed by Manny of his plans to step down, we engaged all Commissioners to determine the best path forward. That process resulted in a unanimous and enthusiastic decision to appoint Marie, who has been such a key contributor to the field. Marie deeply understands the organization’s mission, and has demonstrated an ability to innovate and lead. She is respected for her technical contributions to the wider field of evaluation and synthesis, and has earned loyalty for her strength as a high-level manager. We expect Marie to be an outstanding new leader for 3ie and are thrilled to work with her during what promises to be an exciting new phase.
